There is some excellent hunting in the Otematata area. Also, for a more social (and less strenuous!) event – claybird shooting can be arranged – that usually turns into a fun and competitive outing.
The Oteake Range Hunting block to the east of Otematata – where you will find Red deer and Pigs – this is the best bet for the independent hunter (see below for details).
Over the lake towards the south around Te Akatarawa you will find Wallaby, Pigs and Deer. (Station owner: Fred Graham)
At the Waikoura Station near the Hakataramea River there are Pigs, Wallaby, Red and Fallow deer and Quail. Get in touch with us to arrange a shoot with Murray Elliot at the station.
There are also Rabbits galore at many times of the year. Quail and in some areas Thar and Shammy.
This region is part of the Oteake Conservation Area and is generally gentle, rolling tussock country. Red deer and pigs are found here.
To access the Oteake hunting block from the eastern side of Hawkdun Range, go to the sign posted car park just off SH83 by the Otamatapaio Station driveway. Walking access is the up the Otamatapaio River bed or along the true left of the river. There is no formed track but after a distance of approximately 8 km there is a marked public easement to Otamatapaio Hut.
As a courtesy please contact Bog Roy Station +64 3 4389 400.
To access the block from the western side of Hawkdun Range, there is a public foot and vehicle easement at Shepherds Hut Creek. Runholder permission is required before taking firearms on the easement.

Dogs only are allowed on this block with permission from the landholder, and must be under control.
